My values

It may be easy to pretend to have some of these qualities, some or even most of the time, but without God's help you will let your mask fall and those nearest and dearest to you will see how you fall short, and if your family is anything like my family they will point out all of your transgressions. Thankfully His mercies are new every morning and we get to begin afresh with a clean slate to try all over again the next day.

As I kissed her goodbye at school, she told me today was the first day she washed her face. Now I know that isn’t true, but what she meant was that she’d cleansed her face. She’s growing up and taking to heart all our “little talks” about her body changing. Her hair needs to be washed more often, she needs to drink more water and take care of her skin if she doesn’t want pimples. So when I look at the facecloth left in the hand basin, what do I see? I see progress, my little girl is growing up, becoming a young lady, actually hearing what I say and choosing to embrace her femininity and taking yet another step forward in becoming a woman.

I used My Values - a collaboration between My 4 Princesses Designs and Robyn Pali Designs, on sale now at 30 % off at Enchanted Studio Scraps.

Elise's Pieces Designs

These three products will be on sale from Tuesday.
Watch Elise's blog for details.
A's birthday was on the 30th of April, while their family was up North so when we saw them on Mother’s Day we gave  her 1st birthday present. It was a God loves you book and a Minnie Mouse. She really enjoyed the torn paper and biting on Minnie’s nose.
I thought it was sweet when Topaz woke up stretched and walked over to Shadow, looking for milkies. Shadow was perplexed and just watched him for a while, then got irritated and swatted him away.
Elise's Collab with Chelles Creations and available through Scrap Matters, here.
I just used a quote for this one:
If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother to say it in music - Gourlay Wahler
Her latest kit is a collab with Jeanine Deore and is also available through ScrapMatters.

It is on sale at the moment 20% off.

A more recent news story...

In honour of the Royal Wedding, the girls gathered around the tv from 9.30 am watching the comings and goings. Commenting on what the guests were wearing. Gasping at the hats and shoes. Excited and captivated by all the pomp and ceremony. Watching as William and Catherine said their vows, silent as we waited for the kiss on the balcony. Enjoying tea and dainty sweet pastries as the guys made fun of us girls – saying it must be a chick thing- they enjoyed the tea though, even if they couldn’t identify with us turning to mush as we watched enthralled and thought of Diana and how proud she would have been of her boys. Oh the splendour of being a girl and enjoying a beautiful wedding – I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Heather's challenge 104

Journaling:
This trip was originally planned for September of 2001, but then the terrorist attacks of September 11 changed the baseball game that we had tickets to.

On September 11, I was working in Arlington, VA and saw the smoke from the Pentagon attack after watching the Trade Center attacks in New York on TV. Joey watched as fire and rescue vehicles made their way to the city. I spent the afternoon watching military airplanes fly cover over the city from our apartment balcony. I had to tell my dad what happened because he had been golfing that morning. I cried for a couple of years every time footage of that day was shown on TV. I really thought we were going to die that day. I think most of the country must have thought so, too, because people were so much nicer for a year or so afterwards.

Olivia's challenge 104

Another mini album from me this fortnight.

My album started off as a little 7 Gypsies card & an empty Jenni Bowlin journaling pad. I cut some lined paper for the inside & bound it together like a reporter's notepad, then stamped my title on the card. Under the card I tucked some little pieces of patterned paper like newspaper scraps.

Inside I have written about big news stories that I remember, ones that I took a personal interest in & some that have changed my life. The first major story I remember was the BSE scare back in the 90s. I was only 8 at the time but it really affected me. I never ate much red meat anyway, but as a result of the scare I haven't eaten any since then.

Sue's challenge 104

The first big news story I clearly remember is the day man walked on the moon.

Journaling reads: "July 20th, 1969. The day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon - and it was my birthday!  The day was full of suspense, because we didn’t know exactly when the first man would touch the surface of the moon. We kept the TV on constantly and stayed closed to see the adventure unfold. Just 3 basic news channels back then, and most of us were watching Walter Cronkite narrate this historic event. Phil remembers trying to take pictures of the TV screen with his camera. Not too successful. It was a big deal to fulfil President Kennedy’s challenge to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. We were so proud of our country. What a great moment to share with a little girl turning nine!"

Another from me

I remember that Tuesday afternoon so clearly. It was sunny and the sky was blue, on the drive to visit Julie Jones I heard the news on the radio, they said a small plane had crashed into one of the world trade centre towers. Her tv was on and we watched in horror as the tower burned, people jumped and then as the second tower was hit, they repeated it over and over and it still didn’t make sense.  I struggled to process that this was no movie, but a terror attack in front of me. I got home and watched some more while making supper and bathing the children.
First one tower fell and then the other and our world was changed.

One of the first things we wanted to visit in New York was ground zero and the museum paying homage to those lives that were lost and impacted on September 11th 2001. The museum was quite full, people were quiet, respectful , surrounded by images of terror and loss. Lt-Col Robert Darling was selling his book 24 hours inside the President’s bunker 9-11-01 the White House. I talked Andrew into buying a copy. There were photos and mementoes, a mini statue of liberty covered by ephemera left by mourners paying homage. We saw a statue of the roots of a sycamore tree that was uprooted when the towers collapsed. The sense of grief there is overwhelming.

Karen's challenge 104

Yet another tricky one- I didn't want to have to print out pictures of something terrible for my albums so instead I used lots of journalling cards and wrote a little bit about some of those key events from during my lifetime

Journalling reads

1. Septemer 11 2001
I was at school that day- driving to a lesson at Dormer and the news said two planes has flown into the Twin Towers-The towers fell while I was teaching the lesson on Irish terrorism to my year 11s

2. Death of Diana- 31.8.97
I came downstairs at James' parent house to hear the news of Diana. I was due to start my first ever teaching job the very next day- I ended up spending weeks teaching lessons about her

3. November 1989 Fall of Berlin Wall
I was 15 when the Berlin Wall fell- I was jealous because our school was going a trip there the next Februaay and I had decided not to go!

4. Hillsborough Stadium Disaster 15. 4. 1989
I'd been to town with Nan and Arnie as usual and we came back to see what was going on in the FA cup football Match- Grandad told us what happened as we watched people being stretchered away

5.Death of BIn Laden May 2011
We were on holiday in Drenthe when we heard about Bin Laden- I couldn't believe how thrilled Americans were- not worried at all about revenge

6. Chernobyl 26.4.1986
I think I was staying with Nan and Grandad at the time- this was my worst nightmare come true- I was petrified about nuclear disaster at the time

7 Wedding of Kate and William 30.4.2011
I watched the Royal Wedding at home alone- I was worried Nancy would be missin out being at school but she watched it with her brothers and class on the big screen

8. Heysel Stadium 29.5.1985
I remember we were playing outside in the garden on a warm evening- I knew Dad would be watching the football- I went in to see if it had started but instead there were battles with the police

Easily amused

I also used a template by Designs by Cindy Schneider for the second one.
My journaling:
When we arrived at the Islands of Adventure we chose to splash out and pay extra for the fastpass tickets. No more standing in queues for over an hour. The children wanted to try the roller coaster first, there was almost no wait so we just went. I closed my eyes and prayed through it all. They were totally buzzed by the ride and dragged their Dad along for their repeat turns. It was awesome!

I used Easily amused by My 4 Princesses available at Enchanted Studio Scraps here.

So are you ready for another journaling challenge?

This idea was one from Heather.

The first big news story that you remember exactly what you were doing when you heard about it.

I know my  Mother remembers when JFK was killed, where she was and what she was doing.
My first news story like that was Dianna's death, but then I also remember their wedding, our school hired tvs and we spent the day enthralled as she married her prince.

Sept 11th another biggie. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing as the first stories filtered through to us in South Africa that sunny afternoon. The horror I felt watching the towers collapse and knowing this was real and not a movie.

Otherwise if you have been affected by something that made the news.
Flooding, fires in Australia for example.

The first one is from me,
Title: Charles and Diana
With the focus being on William and Catherine's wedding I couldn't help but remember Charles and Diana's wedding and where I was and what my life was like at that time.

My journaling:
I remember watching the royal wedding in Miss Norton’s biology lab. Wynberg Girls High had hired televisions so that we could all watch at school. Because of sanctions and equity we were unable to hear any of the British singers and musicians, however the South African singers and musicians we listened to were amazing. I was in love with the whole concept of this beautiful woman meeting her prince, falling in love and getting married. From those first glimpses of her green wellington boots before the world knew who this mystery woman was, to those famous photos of her backlit holding one of the children she taught at her nursery school. Her shyness, her hair do so much style to emulate. I wanted to be just like her.

My journaling:
Dad and I chose your paint colour and told you that Jan was only painting your ceiling.
You didn't know that I had already bought bedding and had everything hidden in a suitcase to be revealed once the room was all bright pink and we had got rid of the blue once and for all.
Your surprised smile and heartfelt thanks made it worth it all.

Olivia's challenge 103.

This is my creation for the Mother's Day Challenge. I created a mini book all about my Mum which I'll blog later in the week. These two pages celebrate our friendship. The little envelope contains a letter to my Mum about how much I appreciate her looking out for me. Although some of her rules didn't seem fair when I was younger & she was quite protective, I know that she only had my best interests at heart.

Looking back I'm grateful that she wasn't like other Mums who let their children go anywhere, do anything & stay out really late, because most of those Mums also didn't take an interest in what might be going on at school or with friends. They didn't spend time teaching them how to read, write, cook etc. They didn't enrol them in Brownies, gymnastics, dancing, swimming. Those kids that were left to do their own thing did just that. They may have had more freedom at a younger age but there were things they missed out on too. I have lots of happy memories of time spent with my Mum and we have a great relationship today because of that.
